Why I Choose Distilled Water (and What Might Be Hiding in Your Tap)

Let’s talk about something simple but essential: The water you drink every day.

For the last couple of years, I’ve been using a countertop water distiller in my home and I love it. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes tools that quietly supports my health in a big way. I don’t have to wonder what’s floating around in my water anymore. I know it’s clean, pure, and free from the things I’d rather not be drinking. Because here’s the truth: A lot of what’s in tap water shouldn’t be there.

What’s Really in Tap Water?

  • Chlorine and chloramine – added to disinfect, but they can irritate skin, lungs, and gut flora.
  • Fluoride – a controversial additive with growing concern about long-term effects on bones, thyroid function, and even IQ in children.
  • Heavy metals – including lead, mercury, and arsenic, often leaching from pipes or naturally occurring in groundwater.
  • Pharmaceuticals – trace amounts of medications (yes, including hormones and antidepressants) have been detected in public water systems.
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and industrial runoff – especially in agricultural areas or near manufacturing zones.
  • Microplastics – tiny particles now found in both bottled and tap water around the world.

Even if your local water company meets EPA guidelines, that doesn’t mean the water is free from these toxins—it just means the levels are considered “acceptable.” But is that really the bar we want to aim for when it comes to something we drink all day, every day?

Why I Use Distilled Water

Distillation is simple and effective. It involves boiling water, capturing the steam, and condensing it back into a liquid—leaving behind most contaminants, including heavy metals, fluoride, and pathogens.

When I first got my countertop distiller, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But after just one cycle, I peeked into the collection chamber and—wow. There was a nasty layer of grime and mineral scale left behind after the water was boiled away. That’s the stuff I would have been drinking otherwise.

The water that comes out is crystal clear, has no odd taste or smell, and gives me peace of mind.

Is Distilled Water Safe?

Yes, it’s safe, and very clean. Some people worry that distilled water lacks minerals, but the minerals in water are not the most bioavailable anyway. We get most of our usable minerals from food, not water. If you’re concerned, you can always add a pinch of sea salt or trace mineral drops to remineralize your distilled water—but many people (myself included) find it’s just fine as-is.

Bottom Line

Distilled water might not be trendy, but it’s incredibly effective. It’s one of the best ways to take your water quality into your own hands—no fancy filters, subscriptions, or replacements needed.

If you’ve been looking for a way to clean up your water, I highly recommend checking out a countertop distiller. It’s a small shift that can make a big difference in your daily wellness.

What type of water do you drink? I’d love to hear your experience.
