The Power of Hydration

A few weeks ago at my 32 week prenatal appointment, my fundal height was measuring weeks behind (when it had been right on track up to that point). Additionally, my baby’s heart rate was slightly high. My midwife suggested I focus on drinking more water over the next two weeks to see if that solves it.

I knew I wasn’t drinking enough, but seeing that it was affecting my baby really kicked my butt into gear! I didn’t go crazy, but I did make sure I was intentional after that about drinking water throughout the day.

Two weeks later at my next appointment, my fundal height was back on track and her heart rate was looking great. Of course, this got me thinking about how important water is for everyone! Turns out, hydration is way more powerful than most of us give it credit for.

Why Hydration Matters

Our bodies are about 60% water. Every system we have—circulatory, digestive, nervous, immune, etc.—relies on adequate hydration to function properly. When we’re even mildly dehydrated, we start feeling it: fatigue, brain fog, joint stiffness, dry skin, irritability, cravings, and more.

Water isn’t just a thirst quencher. It’s fuel for:

  • Mental clarity – The brain is about 75% water. No surprise that hydration improves memory, mood, and concentration.
  • Energy levels – Dehydration is one of the top causes of low energy. Even slight water loss can make you feel tired.
  • Detox pathways – Kidneys, liver, lymph—all depend on water to flush toxins efficiently.
  • Skin health – Move beyond the dryness and get that skin glow. Hydration helps your skin stay supple and clear.
  • Digestion and elimination – Water keeps things moving. Literally.

How Much Water Do You Really Need?

The classic advice is “8 glasses a day,” but it’s not one-size-fits-all. I’ve heard that half your body weight in ounces is a better guideline. So if you weigh 150 pounds, aim for about 75 ounces of water. More if you’re sweating, nursing, or detoxing. Here’s a trick that helps me: Start your day with a big glass of water before drinking or doing anything else. It’s a small shift that makes a big difference.

Hydration Hacks That Work

I, personally, just love plain water, but I know there are many people who don’t enjoy it. If that’s you, try these tips:

  • Add lemon, cucumber, mint, or berries for a flavor boost.
  • Use a marked water bottle with hourly goals.
  • Drink herbal teas or broths—they count too! This has been a big one for me in pregnancy – counting every last glass of red raspberry leaf tea.
  • Set reminders on your phone until it becomes a habit.

Hydration and Emotional Health

This one surprised me: Staying hydrated actually helps balance mood. Next time you’re feeling irritable or anxious, grab your water bottle! Your brain runs better when it’s not running dry.

My Challenge to You

For the next 7 days, join me in tracking your water intake. We’ll see if it makes a difference! And if not, you’re not out much. Hydration is one of the easiest wellness upgrades, and it’s completely free.

Start small, stay consistent, and let me know how it goes!
