A Simple Ritual That Feels Amazing and Supports Your Health
My mom first introduced me to the concept of dry brushing several years ago and it wasn’t hard to convince me to try it. It’s easy, cheap, and claims a host of benefits that I wouldn’t mind enjoying.
Since that time, I’ve gone through phases of brushing regularly and phases of forgetting it exists. I’m just now coming back into a phase of remembering it’s a thing and adding it to my routine.
Every time I get back into it, I’m surprised (again) by how much I love it! It gives me a subtle feeling of lightness that I didn’t even realize I was missing.
In this post, we’ll discuss what dry brushing is, why it works, and how you can add it into your routine in a totally doable, low-stress way. I hope you’ll give it a try.
What Is Dry Brushing?
As the name implies, dry brushing is using a dry, bristled brush on your dry skin. No oils, no lotion, no water. Just a few minutes of gentle brushing before you hop in the shower.
It’s traditionally used to support lymphatic drainage, exfoliate the skin, and stimulate circulation. Your body does these things on its own, but dry brushing gives it a little extra support.
Why I Love Dry Brushing
A few reasons I keep coming back to dry brushing:
- Supports Lymphatic Flow – Your lymph system doesn’t have a pump (like your heart does), so it relies on movement. Things like walking, rebounding, massage, and dry brushing help keep things flowing. Dry brushing encourages that drainage, helping your body remove waste more efficiently.
- Naturally Exfoliates the Skin – It’s like a super gentle scrub for your whole body. My skin always feels softer and more energized after dry brushing, especially in dry seasons.
- Encourages Detox – By stimulating circulation and lymph flow, dry brushing can support your body’s natural detox processes. As one who has occasional liver issues, it’s comforting to know that this is something small I can do to facilitate the detoxification process.
- It’s Grounding and Calming – It’s honestly a great time to slow down, be present, and notice and feel gratitude for my body. Taking a couple minutes to dry brush instead of just rushing through the day starts me off on the right foot!
How to Dry Brush
Here’s what I do:
- Grab a brush – Look for one with natural bristles. Some have long handles (good for reaching your back), others are palm-sized (great for travel or smaller hands). You don’t want it too soft, but not painful either — just firm enough to feel stimulating.
- Start at your feet – Always brush toward your heart. That helps support lymph flow. I usually start with the soles of my feet and work my way up — longer strokes on arms and legs, gentle brushing on the stomach in a clockwise circle, and just do your best on the back.
- Go light – This shouldn’t hurt! You’re not trying to scrub your skin off. Gentle, steady strokes do the trick.
- Hop in the shower – After brushing, I jump in a warm shower to rinse away any loosened dead skin cells. I’ll usually put some body oil or tallow on the drier areas after I get out.
- Repeat a few times a week – I do this about 2-3 times a week, but it’s also fine to do it everyday if that’s what you want.
Tips to Make It a Habit
This advice is as much for me as it is for anyone else. Like I said, I go through phases where I completely forget about it! But here are a few things we can all do to be a little more consistent with dry brushing:
- Keep your brush out where you’ll see it. Perhaps hanging it on a hook near the shower would be a good reminder.
- Make it part of your pre-shower routine. I brush for a minute or two while the water heats up.
- Pair it with a positive affirmation. I am a sucker for a good affirmation. “I move waste and stagnation out of my body with ease” would be fitting, but anything that really resonates with you would work!
- Don’t stress if you miss a day — it’s not all or nothing. Even once a week is helpful!
Final Thoughts
Dry brushing isn’t a magic cure for anything. But it’s so simple and easy, and it feels good! So if there’s a chance it’ll also be good for your physical health, I say it’s worth a shot. I love how grounding it is, how my skin feels afterward, and how it reminds me to slow down and care for myself a little more intentionally.
If you’ve never tried it before, maybe give it a shot this week and see what you think. And if it’s already part of your routine, I’d love to hear how it’s helped you!
