With all this talk of fevers last week, I thought it would be nice to highlight a supplement that works well with a fever: Vitamin C!
This is one of those items I always have on hand. You just never know when you’re going to need it, and when it’s needed, it’s needed NOW.
As with all vitamin supplements, it’s important to find a whole-food version so you’re getting the entire natural vitamin in its complete form. Synthetic vitamins are man-made and missing key components that are important in the way the vitamin interacts with the body and does its job!
In other words, ascorbic acid isn’t going to cut it. I’ve said it before, but it’s still the best analogy I’ve heard out there: If complete vitamin C is like a car, ascorbic acid is like the tires. Sure, they are important and they connect the metal to the asphalt, making it go… but without the rest of the car, those tires are going nowhere.
Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen synthesis, which is needed for blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bones. It’s also crucial for healthy brain function as it helps in the synthesis of norepinephrine. Not only that, it’s essential in carnitine synthesis, which is needed for converting fat into energy in the cells. In my house, it is best known for its role with the immune system. Whenever we feel illness coming on, Vitamin C is a go-to. It stimulates the production and function of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and phagocytes. Plus, supplementing with vitamin C increases serum levels of antibodies!
Premier Plant Vitamin C fits the bill!
When it comes to whole-food vitamin C supplements, you really can’t beat Premier Plant Vitamin C. If you look at the ingredients, you’ll find it includes rice, hesperidin, quercetin, cilantro, rose hips, and the star of the show: Amla. Did you know amla provides 10-30 times more vitamin C than an orange? Pretty amazing. Plus, you’re getting all the other vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients of the amla berry, along with the complementary strengths of the other ingredients, making this an antioxidant powerhouse!
As with the rest of their products, this one is high quality, organic, whole-food, no fillers, and plant-based. It’s the whole car, not just the tires. I recently got a cold and did not miss a dose of this stuff until I was better, and it was great! Definitely did its job.
